PRODUCT DEEP DIVE: Insulation Filled Bricks

The challenge of creating energy-efficient buildings often requires rethinking traditional materials. In this edition of our Product Deep Dive series we explore insulation filled bricks, an innovative solution that enhances traditional masonry with advanced insulation properties. This solution is developed by EASI ZERo partners Leipfinger-Bader, Bollerup-Jensen and Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC.

What are they?

Insulation filled bricks are bricks with hollow cavities, that are filled with insulation. This way they achieve excellent thermal insulation properties, eliminating the need for any additional insulating layers, while maintaining the durability of traditional masonry. While contemporary insulated bricks are usually filled with mineral fibres or timber fibres, the EASI ZERo project develops a novel approach with waterglass foam to further improve thermal insulation properties.

Applications

  • External walls for new construction
  • Structural walls with integrated thermal insulation

Environmental benefits

  • Improved energy efficiency: Reduces thermal conductivity by approximately 5% compared to standard hollow bricks
  • Resource optimization: Maximizes the insulation potential of existing brick geometry

These innovative bricks provide a comprehensive solution for energy-efficient wall construction, combining traditional masonry benefits with advanced thermal performance.
